Dog SAFE "Chocolate" Recipe
VERY IMPORTANT: do not use cocoa. Cocoa (and chocolate in general) contains two compounds that are toxic to dogs: Theobromine – the primary toxin. Dogs metabolize theobromine much more slowly than humans, so it builds up in their system and can lead to serious symptoms. Caffeine – also found in chocolate, another stimulant that can negatively affect a dog’s heart and nervous system.
Why Carob?
Carob is a naturally sweet, caffeine-free substitute that looks and tastes similar to chocolate — but without the harmful chemicals. It’s:
- Free of theobromine and caffeine
- High in fiber and natural sugars
- Contains beneficial nutrients like calcium, potassium, and vitamins A, B, and D
Carob is popular chocolate alternative in dog-safe treats, allowing you to safely include “chocolate-style” snacks for Valentine's Day — without any risk.
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp carob powder (NOT cocoa — carob is safe!)
- 2 tbsp melted coconut oil
- 1 tbsp natural peanut butter (xylitol-free)
- Optional add-ins: plain Greek yogurt, crushed freeze-dried strawberries
Instructions:
- Mix all ingredients in a small bowl until smooth.
- Pour into silicone heart molds.
- Freeze for 20–30 minutes until firm.
- Store in fridge until snack time.
